    Iterative turbo beamforming for OFDM based hybrid terrestrial-satellite mobile system

    In the context of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based systems, pilot-based beamforming (BF) exhibits a high degree of sensitivity to the pilot sub-carriers. Increasing the number of reference pilots significantly improves BF performance as well as system performance. However, this increase comes at the cost of data throughput, which inevitably shrinks due to transmission of additional pilots. Hence an approach where reference signals available to the BF process can be increased without transmitting additional pilots can exhibit superior system performance without compromising throughput. Thus, the authors present a novel three-stage iterative turbo beamforming (ITBF) algorithm for an OFDM-based hybrid terrestrial-satellite mobile system, which utilises both pilots and data to perform interference mitigation. Data sub-carriers are utilised as virtual reference signals in the BF process. Results show that when compared to non-iterative conventional BF, the proposed ITBF exhibits bit error rate gain of up to 2.5 dB with only one iteration

    Plasticity in speech production and perception: a study of accent change in young adults.

    This thesis presents the results of two studies that investigated how listeners adapt to different regional accents within the same language. Study 1 investigated whether listeners adjusted their vowel categorization decisions when listening to speech produced in different accents of British English. The results demonstrated that some listeners chose different vowels according to the accent of the carrier sentence. The patterns of adjustment were affected by individual differences in language background (i.e., the degree of experience that an individual has had living in multidialectal environments, and whether the individual grew up in the north or south of England), and corresponded to changes in production that speakers make as a result of sociolinguistic factors when living in a multidialectal environment. Study 2 investigated plasticity in speech production and perception among university students, as individuals change their accent from regional to "educated" norms. Subjects were tested before beginning university, 3 months later and on completion of their first year of study. At each stage they were recorded reading a set of test words and a short passage. They also completed two perceptual tasks they found best exemplar locations for vowels embedded in carrier sentences and identified words in noise. The results demonstrated that subjects changed their spoken accent after attending university. The changes were linked to sociolinguistic factors subjects who were highly motivated to fit in with their university community changed their accent more. There was some evidence for a link between production and perception between-subject differences in production and perception were correlated. However, this relationship was weaker for within-subject changes in accent over time

    Estimating specific surface area of fine stream bed sediments from geochemistry

    Specific surface area (SSA) of headwater stream bed sediments is a fundamental property which determines the nature of sediment surface reactions and influences ecosystem-level, biological processes. Measurements of SSA – commonly undertaken by BET nitrogen adsorption – are relatively costly in terms of instrumentation and operator time. A novel approach is presented for estimating fine (2.5 mg kg−1), four elements were identified as significant predictors of SSA (ordered by decreasing predictive power): V > Ca > Al > Rb. The optimum model from these four elements accounted for 73% of the variation in bed sediment SSA (range 6–46 m2 g−1) with a root mean squared error of prediction – based on leave-one-out cross-validation – of 6.3 m2 g−1. It is believed that V is the most significant predictor because its concentration is strongly correlated both with the quantity of Fe-oxides and clay minerals in the stream bed sediments, which dominate sediment SSA. Sample heterogeneity in SSA – based on triplicate measurements of sub-samples – was a substantial source of variation (standard error = 2.2 m2 g−1) which cannot be accounted for in the regression model. The model was used to estimate bed sediment SSA at the other 1792 sites and at 30 duplicate sites where an extra sediment sample had been collected, 25 m from the original site. By delineating sub-catchments for the headwater sediment sites only those sub-catchments were selected with a dominant (>50% of the sub-catchment area) bedrock formation and land use type; the bedrock and land use classes accounted for 39% and 7% of the variation in bed sediment SSA, respectively. Variation in estimated, fine bed sediment SSA from the paired, duplicate sediment sites was small (2.7 m2 g−1), showing that local variation in SSA at stream sites is modest when compared to that between catchments.     Deep electronic states in ion-implanted Si

    In this paper we present an overview of the deep states present after ion-implantation by various species into n-type silicon, measured by Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy (DLTS) and high resolution Laplace DLTS (LDLTS). Both point and small extended defects are found, prior to any anneal, which can therefore be the precursors to more detrimental defects such as end of range loops. We show that the ion mass is linked to the concentrations of defects that are observed, and the presence of small interstitial clusters directly after ion implantation is established by comparing their behaviour with that of electrically active stacking faults. Finally, future applications of the LDLTS technique to ion-implanted regions in Si-based devices are outlined.</p

    Peculiarities of the stochastic motion in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles

    Antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials are widely used in spintronic devices as passive elements (for stabilization of ferromangetic layers) and as active elements (for information coding). In both cases switching between the different AFM states depends in a great extent from the environmental noise. In the present paper we derive the stochastic Langevin equations for an AFM vector and corresponding Fokker-Planck equation for distribution function in the phase space of generalised coordinate and momentum. Thermal noise is modeled by a random delta-correlated magnetic field that interacts with the dynamic magnetisation of AFM particle. We analyse in details a particular case of the collinear compensated AFM in the presence of spin-polarised current. The energy distribution function for normal modes in the vicinity of two equilibrium states (static and stationary) in sub- and super-critical regimes is found. It is shown that the noise-induced dynamics of AFM vector has pecuilarities compared to that of magnetisation vector in ferromagnets.Comment: Submitted to EPJ ST, presented at the 4-th Conference on Statistical Physics, Lviv, Ukraine, 201

    We compute the polarization of the final-state baryon, in its rest frame, in low-energy meson--baryon scattering with unpolarized initial state, in Unitarized BChPT. Free parameters are determined by fitting total and differential cross-section data (and spin-asymmetry or polarization data if available) for pK−pK^-, pK+pK^+ and pπ+p\pi^+ scattering.
